Introducing my vintage button collection – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, likely from France or Belgium in the 1950s.
This card features a set of 24 buttons, each 20 mm in diameter and made from casein. The buttons are black with a shiny, reflective surface that gives them a polished look. They feature a unique design with a horizontal groove across the center, dividing the button into two raised sections with a two-hole opening within the groove.
In the context of vintage buttons, "couture" often refers to buttons that were used for high-end fashion or custom-made garments, typically associated with designer quality. These Couture buttons reflect that high-fashion style and the distinctive shape suggest they were intended for stylish, custom-made garments, making them a great choice for both vintage-inspired and modern projects.
And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it?s a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
NOTE: please note that colours may slightly differ in reality due to variations in screen types and the effects of photography.
