Introducing my mock horn vintage buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

Set of 6 casein buttons with a layered design, featuring a marbled mock horn pattern in brown and beige tones. The set includes 2 buttons measuring 31mm and 4 buttons measuring 25mm. Each button has a stepped structure with a raised central section, creating a dimensional effect. The surface showcases natural-looking striations that resemble genuine horn, with variations in color intensity.

Likely made from galalith, a casein-based plastic widely used in the early-to-mid 20th century for its durability and ability to mimic organic materials. These buttons are suitable for coats, jackets, knitwear, and historical or costume garments.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
