Introducing my mock horn vintage buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

Set of 12 mock horn buttons featuring a domed shape with a defined rim. Sizes range from 18mm to 30mm. These buttons display a mix of caramel, brown, and black tones with a marbled effect. Some have a polished finish, while others have a more matte or slightly rough surface. They have a sew-through shank back, making them suitable for coats, jackets, blazers, and other structured garments.

The layered structure and translucency suggest they may be made of galalith (casein plastic), a material used from the early 1900s to the mid-20th century for its durability and resemblance to natural horn.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
