Introducing my retro casein buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

This set of 8 vintage buttons features a striking two-tone design with a deep brown base and a bold red band encircling the structure. The surface showcases a raised square center, giving the buttons a dimensional profile with smooth, well-defined edges.

Made from casein plastic, a material commonly used in the early to mid-20th century, these buttons are lightweight yet durable. They have a subtle sheen, with the glossy brown sections contrasting against the matte red band. The two-hole sew-through design ensures secure attachment, making them a great choice for vintage coats, blazers, or statement pieces.

Each button measures 21mm in diameter. The condition is good, with minor signs of age visible on some pieces. These buttons add a bold geometric element to tailored garments, making them suitable for both restoration projects and creative applications.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
