Introducing my vintage mock horn buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

Set of 7 vintage buttons, ranging from 32mm to 21mm, featuring a mock horn appearance with warm caramel and amber tones. The surface has a smooth, polished finish with subtle color variations, from light honey to deeper brown. The buttons have a slightly domed shape with a curved profile and a tunnel shank on the back for secure attachment.

They resemble early casein plastic (galalith), a durable material commonly used in button-making during the early-to-mid 20th century. These buttons are lightweight yet sturdy, making them suitable for coats, jackets, blazers, and historical garment reproductions. Their rich tones work well with wool fabrics, tweeds, and heavier materials.

Each button shows natural variations in color and translucency. Some have darker patches, while others have a more uniform tone. This set is in good condition, with minor surface marks due to age.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.

NOTE: please note that colours may slightly differ in reality due to variations in screen types and the effects of photography.
