Introducing my vintage mock horn buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

This set of 5 retro buttons features a rich brown swirl pattern, giving them a natural horn-like appearance. Measuring 25mm in diameter, they have a smooth, slightly domed surface with a deepened area around the two holes on one side, adding a subtle dimensional effect. These buttons are likely made of galalith (casein plastic), a durable and eco-friendly material popular in the early-to-mid 20th century for its strength and versatility.

Perfect for coats, jackets, cardigans, or historical garment projects, they have a natural look that works well in various designs. The set shows slight variations in marbling, adding to their authentic vintage charm. Some signs of aging may be present, consistent with their age.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
