Introducing my vintage buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

This set of 4 vintage galalith (casein plastic) buttons, each measuring 3 cm in diameter, features a minimalist two-hole design and a smooth matte finish. The off-white color and understated look make these buttons a versatile addition to various sewing or crafting projects. Galalith, also known as casein plastic, was popular from the early 1900s to the mid-20th century and is prized for its durability and unique feel, derived from milk protein.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
