Antique Handmade Filet Lace with Mixed Embroidery Patterns – 320 × 23 cm

A beautiful example of antique handmade filet lace, probably dating from the early 20th century.

What makes this long lace border particularly interesting is the variety of designs and embroidery techniques used throughout the piece.

Each square features a different pattern, combining geometric shapes, floral details, raised embroidery, woven fillings and delicate openwork. Some sections have densely worked motifs, while others use loose threads and decorative stitches to create a completely different texture.

The panels are arranged symmetrically along the length, with a distinctive central monogram-like motif. From the centre, the designs repeat in reverse order towards each end.

Finished with a wide, scalloped crochet lace edging, featuring an openwork pattern of interlocking loops and small decorative picots.

Possibly originally made for a church textile or altar decoration, although many of the individual motifs are decorative rather than specifically religious.

Conditions:

Very good antique condition. Naturally aged, with no obvious holes or significant damage to the lace. Some small age marks.

Care Instructions:

- If washing at home: Hand wash separately in cold or lukewarm water with a mild soap.

- Avoid: Bleach, strong detergents, wringing, or tumble drying — these damage linen fibers and lace.

- Drying: Lay flat on a towel or line dry in the shade (avoid direct sun, which weakens fibers).

- Ironing: Use medium heat while the fabric is still slightly damp, with a pressing cloth if needed to protect the lace.
