Introducing my vintage buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France or Belgium.
This set of six mother-of-pearl buttons, measuring 32mm, in wich each button showcases a natural iridescent quality with subtle tones of black, gray, and hints of purple, adding depth and character. With a gently rounded rim and a four hole design, these nacar buttons have a smooth finish that reveals textures unique to natural shell material. Perfect for jackets, coats, or historical reproductions. Due to the organic material, slight variations in color and texture make each button distinct, enhancing the overall look of any garment.
Mother of pearl buttons are crafted from the inner shell layer of certain mollusks, notably oysters and abalones. This material is valued for its natural iridescence, which gives each button a subtle shimmer and color variations that shift under light. Mother of pearl, also known as nacre, forms when layers of calcium carbonate crystallize around the shell, producing a smooth, durable, and visually distinctive surface.
Historically, mother of pearl buttons have been popular in fine clothing, adding a touch of natural elegance to shirts, dresses, coats, and other garments. These buttons are well-suited for both vintage and contemporary styles, providing a classic, polished look. Their durability makes them a reliable choice for items that require longevity, yet they maintain a delicate appearance that enhances a garment’s aesthetic without overwhelming it.
In terms of care, mother of pearl buttons are relatively sturdy but should be treated gently to preserve their shine and iridescence. They are sensitive to high temperatures and harsh chemicals, so garments with these buttons are best washed in cool water, ideally by hand or on a gentle machine cycle, and should be kept out of the dryer.
NOTE: please note that colours may slightly differ in reality due to variations in screen types and the effects of photography.
