Introducing my vintage buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

These vintage buttons feature a mock horn appearance, a style often crafted from galalith, also known as casein plastic. This material was widely used due to its durability and versatility. The set includes 11 buttons in different sizes, ranging from 27mm to 18mm, each showcasing a marbled pattern in warm brown, beige, and deep coffee tones.

The slightly domed surface and smooth, polished finish replicate the natural texture of horn, with subtle translucency in some pieces. The back features a shank attachment, reinforcing their suitability for coats, jackets, historical garments, or tailoring projects requiring sturdy buttons.

Given the material and appearance, these buttons likely date to the mid-20th century. They are in good vintage condition, with some natural signs of aging typical for casein-based buttons.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
