Introducing my vintage casein buttons – sourced from an old, unused stock of buttons and buckles, most likely made in France.

Set of 13 retro square buttons measuring 19mm, featuring a structured design with raised geometric details. The color appears almost black but reveals a deep dark blue hue when placed next to true black. The surface has a mix of polished and matte areas, enhancing the dimensional look. Two-hole sew-through construction. Ideal for coats, jackets, or projects needing a bold, structured accent.

Likely made from an early plastic material such as casein (galalith), popular in the mid-20th century for its durability and ability to mimic natural materials.

And what is casein? Casein, from which galalith buttons are made, is technically a type of plastic but with natural origins. It's derived from milk protein, so while it's a manufactured material, it's not a synthetic plastic like acrylic or polyester. Casein is often classified as a semi-synthetic material, as it combines natural components with a chemical process to create the final product.
